Unveiled in Turkey: Hypersonic Ballistic Missile TAYFUN Block-4

In a significant display of defense innovation, Turkey has unveiled the Tayfun Block-4 hypersonic missile at the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 held in Istanbul. The event, which hosts more than 1,300 defense companies from over 100 countries, has showcased Turkey's ambition to position itself as a major player in global defense innovation.

The Tayfun Block-4, developed by the defense giant Roketsan, is a significant upgrade over the earlier Tayfun missile. Weighing approximately 7,200 kilograms (over 7 tons) and measuring 10 meters in length with a diameter of about 938 mm, the missile boasts an estimated range between 800 to 1,000 kilometers and achieves hypersonic speeds around Mach 5.

Capable of high speed and advanced maneuverability, the Tayfun Block-4 is equipped with a multi-purpose warhead designed to destroy various strategic targets such as air defense systems, command and control centers, military hangars, and other critical military facilities from a long distance. It features a highly accurate guidance system (GOLIS) that allows pre-launch targeting data input, resulting in a circular error probable (CEP) of no more than 5 meters, indicating very high precision.

The Tayfun Block-4's hypersonic classification signifies a significant enhancement in offensive deterrent capability. Its long range, hypersonic speed, maneuverability, multi-purpose warheads, and high accuracy combine to provide Turkey with a strong strategic strike capability against critical military targets.

The unveiling of the Tayfun Block-4 has stirred regional attention, with Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid warning that Turkey's growing missile and naval capabilities, combined with its ambitions to match Israeli air superiority, could alter the region's strategic balance.

In addition to the Tayfun Block-4, Roketsan has also revealed six new defense systems at the IDEF, including the Gokbora, Eren, Atmaca's new submarine-launched variant (Akata), 300 Er, and Simsek-2. Over 60 systems developed by Roketsan are currently in use by modern armies worldwide, reflecting Turkey's growing innovation and self-reliance in defense technologies.

The IDEF event is supported by Turkey's Defense Industries Secretariat and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, underscoring the government's commitment to the defense sector. The event features 44 nations with official stalls, demonstrating the global interest in Turkey's defense capabilities.

Turkey's ambition in defense technologies is evident through its new systems at the IDEF, with the Tayfun Block-4 serving as a testament to its growing capabilities. The first test launch of the Simsek-1 is scheduled for 2027, further solidifying Turkey's position as a rising power in the defense industry. With the largest navy in the Middle East, Turkey continues to assert its presence on the global stage.
