User never motivated for purchasing Switch 2 due to lack of compelling reasons; sole launch title of interest being a JRPG, which the user already played on DS a decade ago and isn't willing to spend $500 for a reprise.

Alright, ya filthy Animal, let's dive into the Nintendo Switch 2! This little beast is the Switch's beefed-up brother, sporting a fancy 2 on its front and a price tag that'll make your wallet weep.

Now, don't get too excited, pal. It ain't exactly a game-changer for the world, but it's a solid little console, with better hardware, improved frame rates, and even mouse controls on those Joy-Cons—not that I've got a gripe with traditional controls, but hey, options are always nice.

So, you might be wondering, with all these upgrades, where are the killer games to show off its capabilities? Well, that's where things get a bit meh. The Switch 2's launch library is about as dry as a desert in the Sahara.

Consoles are supposed to give us easy access to high-end gaming and exclusive titles that set them apart from other platforms. But in a sea of games that have been out for years on platforms with better hardware, the Switch 2's launch lineup was pretty lackluster, with only three exclusives that caught my eye: Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster (thanks for that name, Square Enix).

Mario Kart World has got more Mario Kart, BIGGER and arguably better, ever. Nintendo has done some cool stuff with the world design, expert players are cracking open the vehicle mechanics like pecans in a vise, and darn it all, I still can't manage to care.

Now, now, don't go thinking I'm being a Debbie Downer about Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. Purchasing a Switch 2 just to play this glorified demo would be like buying a PS5 for Astro's Playroom—and let's be real, Astro's Playroom is free and better. So, that's a wash.

Square Enix gets the win here because Bravely Default FF HD is the only game of these three that I really want to play. Bravely Default is one of my favorite JRPGs, and has done more for turn-based combat than almost any other game of the past decade. I'd love to revisit the first one on a big screen that doesn't hurt my aging eyes. But with a plethora of JRPGs to play elsewhere and a hefty price tag for the Switch 2, I'm left scratching my head.

You might be thinking, "But what about Metroid Prime 4: Beyond? Wasn't that supposed to be a launch game?" Well, tragic as it may be, Metroid Prime 4 had to take a raincheck. And as for the Switch 2 being powerful enough to play games like Cyberpunk 2077, that's true, but not so powerful that I simply have to play them here.

What I'm hankering for is a meaty, colorful single-player adventure that feels like the kind of thing only Nintendo could make. Games like that are the reason I buy Nintendo consoles, not a third-worst version of Cyberpunk. The Switch 2 just doesn't have that right now. 'More Mario Kart Except It's $80' ain't cutting it. There's no Super Mario 64, no Breath of the Wild, no Luigi's Mansion. Heck, even the Wii U launched with a Mario game that I could enjoy on my own.

But there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. An unlikely hero is stepping up to the plate: Donkey Kong. Now, ol' DK and I have had our differences, but it looks like he's been cooking up something special—Donkey Kong Bananza, a game that looks like everything I wanted from a Switch 2 launch exclusive. It's just a few weeks late. Will it be enough to finally pry my cash out of my wallet? Probably—because I am legitimately desperate for a reason to buy this thing. C'mon, Donkey Kong, give me a reason.

Nintendo's also made some hints about Switch 2 release dates for Metroid Prime 4 and Kirby Air Riders, which makes guessing their release dates a whole lot easier. So, here's to hoping that we see more of the games I really want to play on the Switch 2 soon. After all, a hungry gamer is an unhappy gamer.
