Vietnam Proposes Electronic IDs for Foreign Residents
Vietnam's government has proposed a draft decree to introduce electronic identification (eID) accounts for foreign residents. The move aims to streamline administrative processes and enhance digital services.
The draft decree, now open for public feedback on the Ministry of Public Security's portal, outlines a legal framework for updating, sharing, and integrating documents into the eID system. This includes the integration of a 'social welfare benefit account' into the National Identification Application, facilitating state payments.
Eligible for these accounts are foreigners aged six and above, legally residing in Vietnam for 90 days or more, or holding valid long-term visas. Information and documents from national databases will be automatically updated into the identification system. Moreover, the processing time for related administrative procedures will be shortened by 30%.
The draft decree applies to agencies, organizations, citizens, and foreign entities residing or operating in Vietnam. When identification cards or other documents expire, the system will hide the information and notify the citizen to renew it, ensuring continuous access to services. Both Vietnamese citizens and foreigners living abroad can continue using their eID accounts through an internationally connected platform.
