Temu App Offers Local Warehousing in South Africa for Faster Delivery and Reduced Costs

Shopping on the Temu app just got a bit more convenient for South African fashion enthusiasts. The app, which entered the South African market in January 2024, has introduced a local warehousing system that allows for faster delivery and reduced costs on certain items.

To identify items stocked in Temu’s local South African warehouse, look for products labeled with a “local warehouse” tag on the Temu app or website. This label indicates that the item is stocked within South Africa and will be dispatched directly from the local warehouse, enabling faster delivery and reduced import fees.

Products marked "local warehouse" typically skip standard import duties, and customers often only pay a flat R75 delivery fee for orders above R650. This is a significant savings compared to overseas items, which incur higher customs charges.

Currently, the local warehouse mostly stocks home goods, wigs, women’s T-shirts, and increasingly bulkier items like furniture. However, fashion items, especially trendy clothes, are generally not yet labeled as local and still come from overseas with import fees.

Temu accepts both IDs and passports for user verification, making it easier for foreign nationals living in South Africa to shop on the platform. The local warehousing is currently focused on home goods, but the expansion allows Temu to offer new product categories, such as furniture, home goods, and other bulkier items.

The local warehouse model allows sellers to manage their own inventory and logistics, which puts Temu in direct competition with Amazon, which launched a South African site in 2024, and local heavyweights like Takealot and Makro.

To find locally stocked items on the Temu app, users can search "local warehouse" in the search bar, look for the "Local Warehouse" label, check delivery estimates, and delivery fees. It's important to note that if a purchase is not marked as local, import duties may apply.

In July 2025, Temu opened a local warehouse in South Africa. Weekly downloads of the platform's app peaked between 72,000 and 551,000 in Q3 2024, while monthly active users climbed from 788,000 to nearly 1.8 million in just two months.
