In a celebration of innovative gaming, the NVIDIA RTX Remix Mod Contest concluded at Gamescom 2025, awarding cash prizes totalling $50,000 to several standout mods that reimagined the graphics of classic PC games using path tracing.

The winner of the Best Overall RTX Remix Mod was Painkiller RTX Remix, developed by Merry Pencil Studios. This remastered version of the 2001 first-person shooter game won a cash prize of $20,000 and 6 months of GeForce NOW Ultimate, thanks to its stunning asset work, featuring new physically-based materials, geometry, and high-poly displacement maps. The revamped environments, taking advantage of dynamic lighting, were also praised by the judges. Moreover, Painkiller RTX Remix boasts over 35 remastered levels, earning it the Most Complete RTX Mod with an additional cash prize of $10,000.

Another notable winner was the remaster of the 2003 platformer I-Ninja, named I-Ninja Remixed. This mod, submitted to the RTX Remix Modding Contest, used path tracing to illuminate the vivid and fantastical environments of the original game. Lead artist tadpole3159, from an acclaimed British game development studio, aims to completely remaster I-Ninja's multiplayer mode. g.i.george333, another artist involved in the project, updated over 2,000 textures with PBR materials and added new lighting throughout the game.

The runner-up for Best Use Of RTX In A Mod was Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines - RTX Remaster, by Safemilk. This mod won a cash prize of $5,000 and 6 months of GeForce NOW Ultimate for its impressive use of RTX effects, parallax occlusion mapping, remodeled geometry, and RTX Skin technology.

The remaster of the classic Carentan map from Call of Duty 2, titled Call of Duty 2 RTX Remix of Carentan, was a Community Choice RTX Mod winner. This mod enhanced the player characters by using photo scanning real World War 2 combat clothing and artifacts via a process called photogrammetry. Additionally, textures and surfaces were remade with additional geometric detail, physically-based materials, and Parallax Occlusion Mapping. A full day-night cycle with dynamic lighting was also introduced in this remaster.

Over 237 active projects and 100 RTX Remix mods have been released, spanning games like Half-Life 2, Need for Speed Underground, Portal 2, Deus Ex, and more. These mods have been downloaded over 2 million times, showcasing the popularity of the NVIDIA RTX Remix platform among gamers.
