Witness the triumphant victors of the largest global astrophotography contest in 2025

In an extraordinary display of young talent, Daniele Borsari, a 15-year-old amateur astronomer, has clinched the prestigious ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2025 award. His winning entry, Orion, the Horsehead and the Flame in H-Alpha, showcases one of the most famous regions of the winter sky: the Orion Nebula.

This stunning black and white image captures the dynamic gas clouds of the Orion, Horsehead, and Flame Nebulae as they roil and billow through space. Orion, the Horsehead and the Flame in H-Alpha won in the Stars and Nebulae category and was also the judges' pick for best overall image.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London will display the winning photos from the 2025 competition, including Daniele's masterpiece, from 12 September 2025. More information about the competition and how to enter for next year can be found at www.rmg.co.uk/astrophoto.

The competition boasts a variety of categories, including Aurorae, Galaxies, Our Moon, Our Sun, People and Space, Planets, Comets and Asteroids, Skyscapes, and an Annie Maunder Open Category. Two special prizes, the Sir Patrick Moore Prize for Best Newcomer and the ZWO Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year, were also awarded.

The Sir Patrick Moore Prize for Best Newcomer in 2025 went to Encounter Across Light Years by Yurui Gong and Xizhen Ruan. This image shows a fireball streaking across the sky in the foreground, with the Andromeda Galaxy visible in the deep, distant cosmos.

The winning image in the Galaxies category is The Andromeda Core by Weitang Liang, Qi Yang, and Chuhong Yu. This photograph offers an incredible view of the Andromeda Galaxy.

The ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2025 awards have been announced by the Royal Observatory Greenwich. A total of 5,882 entries were submitted, with 1,141 individual entries received. The competition continues to inspire budding astronomers and photographers worldwide, showcasing the beauty and mystery of the cosmos.
