New Mexico Lobos Women's Golf Kicks Off Season at Home
The University of New Mexico (UNM) women's golf team is set to begin its 2023 season this week, hosting the 47th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course.
The tournament, which consists of 15 schools, including Mountain West foes Fresno State and UNLV, will see UNM represented by Ava Cepeda, Chelsea Truong, Maria Caparrós Levin, Ciara Rushmer, Rebecca Galasso, and a freshman, Juliette Holé. Caparrós Levin, the lone senior on the team, is also playing in her final home event.
Caparrós Levin expressed her excitement for the upcoming event, stating that it's amazing to play at home where people can watch. She aims for more consistent scores this season.
UNM head coach Jill Trujillo feels "really good" about her team heading into the tournament. However, she expressed concern about players leaving the team, as a player from Querétaro, Mexico transferred to Georgia in the offseason, earning All-Mountain West honors for UNM last season.
Trujillo mentioned the importance of team dynamics, emphasising the need for the team to effectively replace three seniors and the unanimous Mountain West Freshman of the Year from last season. Freshman Juliette Holé will play as an individual in the tournament.
The 54-hole tournament will be contested on Monday (36 holes) and Tuesday (18 holes). The New Mexico women's golf team's goal is to win the conference championship, make it to regionals, and return to the national championship.
Caparrós Levin finds the support from the home crowd motivating and is looking forward to a successful season. For the latest updates on the team's performance in the tournament, keep an eye on the official UNM Lobos website or sports news sources.
