Yara Launches Europe's Largest Renewable Hydrogen Plant

Yara International has inaugurated Europe's largest renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya, Norway, with a capacity of 24 MW. The facility, part of Yara's new Yara Climate Choice portfolio, aims to decarbonize the food value chain.

The plant generates hydrogen through water electrolysis, powered by renewable energy. This process replaces natural gas, slashing annual CO2 emissions by 41,000 tonnes. Yara has partnered with Berge Bulk to equip its Newcastlemax bulk carrier, Berge Olympus, with BARTech WindWings from Yara Marine Technologies. This innovation reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, promoting sustainable shipping.

Yara is exploring one to two world-scale low-carbon ammonia production projects with CCS in the US. Additionally, the company targets to cut 800,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions from its ammonia production at Yara Sluiskil through CCS by 2023. The first tonnes of fertilizers made from renewable ammonia have already been delivered from the Herøya plant.

Yara's new renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya and its Yara Climate Choice portfolio mark significant steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the food value chain. The company's investments in low-carbon ammonia production and partnerships for sustainable shipping demonstrate its commitment to a greener future.
