Zabaykalsky Krai Bolsters Cybercrime Response with Special Group

Authorities in Zabaykalsky Krai are bolstering their response to the rising threat of cybercrime. A specialized group involving prosecutors will be established to tackle IT-crimes more effectively. Meanwhile, the prosecutor's office has taken legal action against cybercriminals, seeking damages on behalf of vulnerable victims.

Cybercrimes now make up 36.5% of all crimes in the region, with material damage soaring by 54.6% to 635 million rubles. The prosecutor's office has filed 95 lawsuits totalling 25.1 million rubles to recover losses inflicted on socially vulnerable victims.

Law enforcement agencies are stepping up their game. They plan to swiftly initiate criminal cases for each cybercrime incident and collaborate with banks to block and seize funds used by criminals. This comes as the number of registered cybercrimes in the region has climbed by 14.4% to 4579 cases so far this year.

Despite these efforts, the detection rate for IT-crimes remains low at 18.3%. However, the amount of recovered damage has more than doubled to 15 million rubles. Authorities are also strengthening control over telecommunications operators to hold them accountable for allowing traffic from spoofed numbers.

The creation of a specialized investigative-operational group signals a concerted effort to combat the growing menace of cybercrime in Zabaykalsky Krai. While challenges persist, particularly in detecting these crimes, the region is taking significant steps to protect its citizens and hold cybercriminals accountable.
