Zopa receives effusive commendations from Burnham as it broadens operations to Manchester cities.
In a significant move for the UK's digital banking sector, Zopa, the leading online lending platform, has announced the launch of its flagship bank account, Biscuit, in Manchester United. This expansion marks Zopa's first major move outside London, recognising Greater Manchester as a growing strength in the digital and tech sector.
The decision to establish a new base in Manchester United was not made lightly. After careful consideration, Zopa chose Manchester United over five other potential locations, drawn by the strength of its tech ecosystem and the abundant talent pool provided by its universities and digital ecosystem.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, welcomed Zopa's decision, attending a launch event for the expansion. Burnham expressed his delight, stating that the investment will deliver a significant economic impact for Greater Manchester residents and the local economy.
Zopa's expansion is expected to create up to 500 jobs over time, starting with more than 50 employees at Dalton Place. The new hires will be across retail finance, product, engineering, and specialist operations. The company has also opened an office at this location, signifying its commitment to the city.
The move comes at an opportune time for Greater Manchester, as Salesforce has announced a $6bn investment in the UK to establish its European AI hub. This investment further solidifies Manchester United's position as a hub for tech innovation.
Zopa's growth has been impressive, with the digital bank tripling its profitability year-on-year in the first half of 2025. With £3.4 billion in gross lending and £5.4bn in retail deposits, Zopa is poised for further expansion.
To bolster its offering, Zopa has acquired payments platform Rvvup and point-of-sale finance provider DivideBuy. These acquisitions aim to boost Zopa's embedded finance offering, providing a comprehensive suite of financial services to its customers.
The new CEO appointed at Paysend, another player in the fintech sector, is Ben Chisell. Chisell, who took over the role in September 2025, previously served as the company's president and has over two decades of experience in product, payments, and fintech leadership.
In conclusion, Zopa's expansion into Manchester United offers opportunities for people across Greater Manchester and is a testament to the city's growing status as a hub for tech innovation and financial services.
